Shining[Star]: Pause Designs
Tuesday, August 10, 2010 11:11 AM  | 0 Comments

Yesterday we welcomed Pause Designs to our site.  Today, we chatted with the creators behind these designs.

Describe your design style:
Streetwear with cartoon surrealist content.

What would you tell others about your designs?
Malls suck. Support underground.

Describe your intended audience:
People interested in art, design, fashion, fun, music, etc.

What kind of people would you want to buy your designs?
Anyone that will enjoy wearing it.

How did you get into the fashion business?
Well, Andrew’s dad is Rick Klotz, Eric’s dad is Bobby Hundreds, and Ken’s dad is Justin Bieber. So, naturally, our dads wanted us to follow in their footsteps. We were pretty much forced into fashion as kids. We wanted to be accountants.

Why did you choose fashion as a career?
It’s not so much a career as it is a way to recruit members for our gang.

Who or what is your design inspiration?
Aaron Horkey, Jeremy Fish, Kaws, Craola, Tom Hanks, Glenn Barr, Alphonse Mucha, various street artists, etc.

Currently, what's your favourite trend?
Deep fried mars bars.

Who is your favourite designer?
Freshjive, The Hundreds, Johnny Cupcakes, Kidrobot, Upper Playground, etc.

What is the one place you hope to bring your designs to?
We’d love to get into Tokyo.

What's your favourite material to use for your designs?
Two cups of plastisol, 3 heaping tablespoons of creativity, a dash of combed fine jersey cotton. Mix well, bake at 375. Let cool before wearing. Serves everyone.

A big thanks to Pause Designs for this relatively short chat, but I think they'd rather let their designs do the talking.

Sight[Seeing]: Another Word For Pink Look Book Shoot
Tuesday, August 10, 2010 9:23 AM  | 0 Comments
I am sure by now you should have the name Breeyn McCarney printed in your mind (if not, click here). Today, I am going to show you a look book shoot I have done for her Another Word For Pink collection.

This shoot took place in High Park and it involved 3 of her dresses: Pink Jersey T-shirt Dress, Floral-print T-Shirt Dress and White with Black Flowers Print Dress from her signature line. We were lucky to be able to capture the sunset light during the shoot since that time period is always the most beautiful moment of a day. The outcome of the shoot was fantastic and thank you so much to Kelly for being an amazing model!

Here are some of my favourite photos I have picked from the shoot

Shining[Star]: Breeyn McCarney

Breeyn McCarney, a Toronto based fashion designer who has gained a lot of buzz after showcasing her first signature line collection in March, is now selling both of her lines (Breeyn McCarney and Another Word For Pink) on Ukamaku. For people who have no idea who she is, you are in for a treat today because I have prepared some questions for her to answer to solve some of your question bubbles.

Would you mind to describe your design style? What would you tell others about your designs?
My design style tends towards whimsy and fairy tales. An enduring theme in my work is that sort of borderline found in many kids stories...Grimm fairy tales are intended for children, yet they are very dark and scary. There is this place between childish and gothic – the same place that Alice lives, and that Tim Burton makes films in, and that is also where I like to play. There is still some magic, some fantasy, some darkness, some innocence Describe your intended audience.

News Item: Welcoming Pause Designs
Monday, August 9, 2010 10:38 AM  | 0 Comments
We're excited to welcome Pause Designs to our site.

Started by two talented artists, with the premise of creating garments that matches with the price tag, most often lost with most designs.  Pause Designs is changing that notion with their collection being more than a collection of printed apparel and accessories.  Each design is built on the premise of creating a proper piece of artwork that reflects the creativity and quality of their designs.

Get to know more about Pause Designs by visiting their Profile Page, and look out for our interview with them very soon.

Sight[Seeing]: My Day At Worth. By David C. Wigley F/W Look Book Shoot
Friday, August 6, 2010 10:22 AM  | 0 Comments
Fall and Winter season has finally arrived and all brands are working hard on creating some amazing photos for their look books.

A while ago, David C. Wigley invited me to visit Mckenzie James' studio to check out his collection -- Worth. by David C. Wigley look book shoot. Even though I saw the collection during FAT (Toronto Alternative Arts & Fashion) week, this time I had the opportunity to touch and feel the fabric David uses.  I absolutely love it!

During the shoot time, I took some behind the scenes photos. I can't wait to see the look book photos soon! When I receive the photos from David, I will post them right here, so make sure you keep checking this blog from time to time.

Here are some behind the scenes shots (yep, the men's collection is not shown here.  Stay tuned for the final images!)

I am loving the collection I see here.

This shirt is amazing!

I love this suit!

News Item: Ukamaku @ Liberty Village
Thursday, August 5, 2010 9:59 AM  | 0 Comments
Recently, we moved into Liberty Village.  If you haven’t heard of Liberty Village, it’s one of Toronto’s unique and growing neighbourhoods -- almost similar to its Distillery District rival, a once heavy industrialized area with many factories (now closed off, of course, and transformed into various studio/office spaces).

Minutes away from the downtown core by streetcar, Liberty Village is rapidly transforming into a major hub for art studio & galleries, small boutiques & shops, and small restaurants & cafes.

This is where you’ll find us.  Visit us in this beautiful neighbourhood, take a stroll through the various paths, and you may just find a hidden part of the Village we have yet to discover.
